The Roundhill
|
The Roundhill, Ditchling Road, Brighton Elvis didnıt die in 1977, he was alive and well and running my local pub, The Roundhill, in Brighton. A bit of a come down after starring at Las Vegas for so long, but it seemed to suit him. Unfortunately, it didnıt suit many others and the Roundhill didnıt exactly rock to the rafters, despite Elvisı sterling efforts. Just over a year ago, however, unnoticed by the Daily Sport, Elvis sadly passed away and The Roundhill was taken over by Elvisı step-son, Jeff Coleman . 'So what' you may ask? Well, Jeff has not only turned out to be an excellent landlord. Jeff is also a Gooner. Not your 'look at the back page occasionally and keep an eye on the results' type Gooner, but a 'full-blooded, dye in the wool, follow them over the rainbow' type, and itıs heaven! Jeff has transformed the place and seems to have found a happy balance of keeping the locals happy whilst creating football (and particularly Arsenal) heaven. Digital TV means that we can follow the team even if theyıre playing in some far flung corner of the Milky Way, or worse, at White Hart Lane. To be fair Jeff doesnıt discriminate, and in the name of good business, heıll show other games as well, but mainly so that he can mingle and take the piss. There are a high number of Gooners living in Brighton and I can honestly and heartily recommend the Roundhill as an oasis of Goonerism, particularly on match nights. If you donıt know how to get there, just ask your friendly Streamline taxi driver, most of them are Arsenal supporters, theyıll get you there safely. You can even pick up a Highbury High behind the bar, if yours truly ever remembers to deliver them. By Phil Gassmann |
