The Moray Arms

The Moray Arms, Durham Road

Claims abound as to the location of the best pint of Guinness in London. Those who frequent the Moray Arms are in no doubt. Under the tender loving care of Pat and Sheila Sullivan who for the last 35 years have turned the keeping and pouring of Guinness into an art form. The first taste of the 'black stuff' in The Moray is an event few forget. The Moray is in Durham Road - midway between Hornsey Road and Stroud Green Road. The pub interior is hardly contemporary. Homely sums up the saloon bar - which is a shrine to Arsenal triumphs, full of photographs and memorabilia - even the Juke Box has more than its fair share of Gunner tracks. Meanwhile the larger public bar is given over to Gaelic football. As regards Gooner-celebrities, Johnny Rotten has been known to drop in for the odd pint or three. The Moray also boasts Steve - named a few years ago by the Sun as ŒThe World's Nuttiest Football Fanı and Graham Hawkins who has presided over the ŒCourt of King Grahamı before every home game there for the last 20 years. Pat and Sheila are leaving for a well-deserved retirement this summer. Allow plenty of time for the walk to the ground (about 15 minutes with a following wind) and don't expect the Guinness to be served in under five minutes from the moment it's been ordered. But go there you should - because under Pat and Sheila the Moray gives you a pub experience the like of which we will never see again. Reviewed by Eddy Pratt
